John Winston Brown (Age 93)

ALMA ROSE CHAPARAS (Age 89)  

On Monday, August 12, 2019, of Silver Spring, MD. Beloved wife of Sotiros Demetrios “Sam” Chaparas for 63 years; mother of Paula (John) Kearney, James Chaparas; grandmother of Elizabeth, Jack, Clare and Michael Kearney. She was preceded in death by parents, Walter and Alma (Scholten) Monnig; and brothers, Walter Jr., Louis and Robert Monnig. She is also survived by many loving family members and friends.

Memorial mass at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 15661 Norbeck Boulevard, Silver Spring, Maryland 20906 will be held Friday, August 23 at 12 p.m. Interment immediately following mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

WORTHY, Kenneth Martin

Kenneth Martin Worthy
A longtime Washington Tax Attorney, who served as Chief Council of the Internal Revenue Service by Presidential Appointment (and Senate confirmation), from 1969 to 1972, died at home in Chevy Chase, MD on August 11, 2019. Mr. Worthy was born in Dawson, GA, in 1920. He attended The Citadel, Emory and Harvard, and served as a Captain in the Army in World War II and the Korean War.
He came to Washington in 1947 and for over forty years practiced law with the firm of Hamel, Park & Saunders and its successor, Hopkins & Sutter (now Foley & Lardner). He served as president of the Bannockburn Citizens Association and of the Barker Foundation, a member of the Boards of Trustees at the Chelsea School in Hyattsville and St. John’s College in Annapolis, and a member of the Diocesan Council of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. He was a member of the Metropolitan Club, City Tavern Club, and Chevy Chase Club.
Mr. Worthy was married to Eleanor Vreeland Blewett, of Newport News, VA, from 1947 until her death in 1981. He was married to Katherine VanAusdal Teasley, of Washington, from 1983 until her death in 2019 at their home in St. Simon’s, GA. He is survived by his son, Skeeter Worthy (Anne); three stepdaughters, Lisa Ourisman (John), Kris Duderstadt (Tom), Lauris Geheren (Mike); and two stepsons, John Jackson, Jr. (Linda) and David Jackson (Lynne); 17 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. His daughter, Jeffrie Worthy Steenwerth, died in 2008.
A funeral service will be held at Christ Church, Georgetown on Monday, August 26 at 11 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the Chelsea School

On Monday, August 12, 2019, of Silver Spring, MD.  Beloved husband of Jane M. Ruane; father of Sean, Michael (Erin), Margaret (Rob Hermstein), & Patrick;  grandfather of Shaylin, Cayley, Seamus, Caitlin, Emily, Clara & Oakley;  brother of Maureen & Jim Costas, Rose Kuhns, Timothy Ruane, Alicia & Norman Volk.  Also survived by Mary Pat & John Schermerhorn, Kathy & Bob Gerber, Walter & Joan Mullon, Deborah & Terry Starr and many beloved nieces and nephews.  Brother of the late Kevin Mullon & Barbara Ruane.  Graveside service and Interment will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD, Thursday, August 22, 2019 at 9 a.m.  (Please meet at the cemetery office by 8:45 a.m.).  Following the Interment, a Visitation will be held at St. Peter’s Church, 2900 Sandy Spring Road, Olney, MD, from 10 to 11 a.m., where a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 am.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to No Warrior Left Behind

MARR, William J.

WILLIAM “BILL” JOHN MARR

With a heavy heart, the family of William John Marr (Bill), age 90, share the news of his passing on Aug 12, 2019.

William was born in 1929 in Aberdeen, Washington State, and grew up as the oldest of 5 boys.  His parents, William Otis and Retta Arlitta, predeceased him as did two brothers Lawrence and Eugene and his wife Virginia.  Bill grew up in Washington and was the first in his family to graduate from college at the former College of Puget Sound.  After college Bill joined the United States Air Force and began his life time journey around the world. Stationed in New York he met and married the love of his life, Virginia, and their family grew throughout their travels as they added two daughters and one son.  By 1977 he retired as a Colonel in the USAF, having served throughout the United States and in England. He continued working in a civilian capacity. He and Virginia fulfilled a dream to live on the water near Annapolis, Maryland. They continued their traveling throughout the world on cruises to Europe, Asia, Australia, Tahiti, Antarctica, the Caribbean, Alaska, and throughout the US, sometimes even taking the children and grandchildren along.  The final move from their beloved waterfront view was to the Riderwood Village in Silver Spring, Maryland. There they made new friends, continued gardening, and taking trips.

Virginia passed away in 2018 after a short illness.  Bill finally gave up his struggle against Alzheimer’s and left us in 2019.

Bill is survived by his three children, Carey (Randy) McDaniel, William E. (Cynthia) Marr, and Rebecca (Brian) Osborne, six granddaughters Shannon, Allison, Jessica, Emily, Isabelle, and Hannah, two brothers Donald and Thomas, along with many nieces and nephews.

Per his request Bill will be interred next to Virginia in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.

Beloved husband of Yuet Hah Chan for 63 years and father of sons Edward, Chris, and Lewin.   Mr. Chan was a head chef for many years working at several different Chinese restaurants in the Washington DC metropolitan area. In addition to raising a family, Mrs. Simons had a long and successful career in civil service until retiring from the Department of Agriculture. DONALD J. HOGAN (Age 89)

Don died peacefully on Monday, July 29, 2019, surrounded by family at home. Don grew up in Washington D.C., attended Gonzaga College High School and graduated from The Catholic University of America School of Architecture. He worked as an architect from 1953-2005. He was an original member of Our Lady of Mercy Church at which he and Ann, his wife, coached numerous boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. He became director of the C.Y.O. of Washington, D.C.  Don is survived by Ann, his wife of 65 years, and family, Don Jr. (Lurana), Pat, Kathleen, Ann Healey (Steve) and Mary; grandchildren Ben, Michelle, John, Shannon, Clare and Dylan; his sister Marion O’Donnell and over 50 nephews and nieces. Relatives and friends may call at Our Lady of Mercy Church 9200 Kentsdale Dr. Potomac MD 20854 on Saturday, August 17, from 11am to 12noon, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at noon. Patricia O’Connor Behrens

Patricia O’Connor Behrens, a native of Washington DC. passed away on Saturday August 3, 2019.  She loved her 8 children, 7 still living (one who she’s now reunited with in heaven), 5 nieces and nephews, 17 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  She was a graduate of the Academy of the Holy Cross and attended George Washington University.  Patricia was a devoted member of the Christ Child Society and the Holy Cross Sisters Guild.  At 91 years young, she came from a long line of strong Irish Catholic women, was very generous and will be missed by all.
